No Sandwiches, No Skittles

Online lectures, discussions, assignments and mid semester examinations – too much to bear during a time where we are trapped in homes. I was crying internally for a chance to relax and release all my stress, but for the longest time it felt as if my wish was going to be nothing but a daydream – until it was not anymore. The Club Service Avenue called volunteers to organize the annual club picnic some time ago. A club picnic of all things? It sounded fun, but I hesitated a bit to put my name in the list as I was not very confident if I would be able to balance it all – the exams and assignments had already eaten…

An Experience With Sleep Paralysis

I woke up suddenly from my sleep feeling unusually afraid. As I opened my eyes, I could see the surrounding of my room and the lamp which dimly illuminated it. From the distance I could hear the clock in the room ticking. I felt uneasy as there was a sense of something or someone inexplicably evil lurking in my room. It’s basically that feeling when you are in a dark room alone by yourself and then you get the feeling that you aren’t really ‘alone’. As I turned my face to the left, there right next to my bed, looking at me and standing was a hooded faceless figure wearing a long black robe. For unknown reasons I instinctively recognized…

Connected, But Connecting?

I was at a family gathering the other day and I took a quick sweep of the room. I was struck by the silence that engulfed us. When we were kids, a minute without the adults used to be enough for us to get into unimaginable mischief, but now we've been left to our own devices for hours, yet not one of us were actually talking; no; instead of interacting with each other, we each seemed to be fascinated and absorbed with the same thing, the thing that illuminated our faces with a blue light, only to show blank and vacant expressions- the Smartphone. Smartphones and the multitude of social media platforms that they open to us are relatively new…

The Real Life Patronus Charm

Since my childhood, my favourite time of the day has been the dusky evening. Watching through my wide-opened windows while sipping the evening tea with some fine snacks is the most peaceful thing. One main thing which bound me to this scenario since my younger days is the evening sky. It looks so charming with all the bright pastel shades. Isn’t this such a fascinating scenario? Then, a tiny breeze enters my room and secretly whispers to the most eye-catching object that hangs on my wall; The Dream Catcher. At first glance, it is just a decorated modern handcraft. A knitted hoop, much like a cobweb, decorated with beads and feathers. But for me, it is more than just a…

Seasons Of The Year

Mother Earth has four major seasons every year. These four seasons show us how great mother nature is. Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter follow one another regularly and give people a wonderful experience throughout each year. Each season has its own light, temperature and weather patterns. As the weather changes, plants change too and animals change their behavior to suit the weather. Unfortunately, we Sri Lankans don’t get a chance to witness the beauty of these seasons because we are living in a country that is close to the equator. But we can see people in western countries and those who are living near the Poles experiencing the impact of each season. Spring and Autumn are very attractive seasons while …

The Tale of a Lost Friend

"Man’s best friend”. There's absolutely no need for extensive descriptions to elaborate on those few words of simple truth. Dominant and mainstream research shows that the origin and evolution of this human-canine bond dates back to around 15,000 years or longer and that our canine companions were most likely the first animals to have lived side by side with humans. Well, that would explain their uncanny ability to understand us; the comforting lick just when we need it, that makes us feel better every time. Ever wondered why the phrase "doggy eyes" or "puppy eyes" exists and not, let's say, "kitten eyes"? If you search up Puss in Boots when he makes those big, round and sad eyes there is a…

Wonders That Come To Life When The Lights Are Turned off

Do you enjoy watching the night sky? If your answer is ‘no’, you probably haven’t seen a meteor shower yet. I fell in love with the night sky back when I was in school. For Science, we had this brief unit on constellations and planets. Upon seeing the photographs of stars, planets and meteors, I was immediately fascinated. From that day on, watching the night sky has become one of my favorite hobbies. Observing the night sky is not that difficult. Of course, having a telescope or a binocular would make it easier, but your naked eye is more than enough to enjoy the marvel of outer space. Millenniums ago, however, people did not have any devices to stargaze. They…
