State of the Blog #1

Hello all! It’s been a while since you’ve heard from us, hasn’t it? We’re here to tell you where we’ve been and what the road ahead for us here at the Editorial looks like. The first few months, no doubt, have been absolutely electric and we couldn't be prouder of everyone in the team. December however, proved to be a rather slow month for us and if you’re wondering why, it’s because the Editorial took a much-deserved break where we gave all our writers some time to rest after what proved to be a very intense yet highly productive first five months. Trust us when we say that they deserved it. But January marks a whole new month and with…

Interview: Methmini Kariyakarawana

After helming the Rotaract Club for an entire year, with a sense of dedication and earnest like no other, our Immediate Past President went on to represent the district committee, as its Joint Director for International Service. After seeing quite little of her for the past month, we were curious about how our beloved Past President was handling her new position, and what she thought of the new board of administration that has taken up after her. And in the middle of her busy schedule, Rtr Methmini Kariyakarawana swiftly answered all our questions, with her usual humor and modesty. Now, while you're no stranger to the realm of Rotaract and in extension the Rotaract Club of University of Colombo, Faculty…

Lumos

Looking back at the whirlwind of three months we’ve passed since the election of the new Board, we believe it’s safe to say that in our innocence, neither of us imagined a leap of such monumental proportions that transported us from being mere literary enthusiasts who occasionally (and might we add, quite enthusiastically) peer-reviewed each other’s work, to heading the Rotaract Editorial as Co-Editors. Let us be clear, we are not strangers to the fact that this is a rather ambitious feat in itself. For the first time in Rotaract history, the creative decisions are made by not one, but two editors working in synchronicity. And in the light of this alarming realization, we have now found our collective consciousness…

The Cyber Experience

Never did I imagine myself ever writing this article. Well, you guys are in luck! Because for the upcoming approximate 11 months and whatever days you will get to witness the full “Cyber” experience! Just to clear it up, “Cyber” was my nickname back in school. Some people still call me by it. While I am happy to detail what the “Cyber” experience entails, I believe that some more important things will precede that section. So, without further ado, let's get into it! Now, as we all know, Methmini Akki and Dewni Akki did a fantastic job leading the club through some really unexpected times and what a rollercoaster it was! From community service initiatives such as “Punchi Ape Naththal”…

‘SLAMM-ing Through’

Fun, thrill, and excitement feels light years away during this pandemic and escaping the dullness and monotony of confinement seems impossible (Wouldn’t you agree?). However, this ‘impossible’ escape was made possible through ‘The Great Escape: SLAMM 2021’. The annual scavenger hunt organized by the five Rotaract clubs of the University of Colombo made its way through the perils of an apocalyptic labyrinth on the 29th of May 2021. Brace yourselves as I take you down memory lane to the day we brainstormed our way past zombies and viruses to get to safety. The arena for SLAMM was set not only for seasoned Rotaractors but for the freshers of the University as well. Having been an absolute fresher in Rotaract, I…

From Panels to Pixels: The Misunderstood Medium That Is Video Games

Video games, the very idea of it, what picture does it paint in your mind? In the modern day and age, if you were to walk up to an individual who doesn’t necessarily engage with the medium, especially in Southern Asia and ask them what their take on video games is, you’d mostly hear a range of answers that for the most part, circle around the common consensus of it being a simple activity to pass time or an activity which is unproductive, wastes time and is futile with very little to no potential of storytelling or world building. It’s definitely something to ponder upon as to how the public came to such a fixed collective conclusion. Thereby, let’s try…

STEP RIGHT UP! IT’S THE EARLY, EARLY SHOW!

I’ve always imagined Rotaract to be this huge machine which was larger than the sum of its parts, a perfect representation of pure synergy, which gravitated to the undertaking of small to large-scale projects that aimed at providing leadership and community service amongst other things. Now, don’t get me wrong, I still hold that view and to further confirm my stance on the matter I’m still told that’s what Rotaract is. However, due to the recent COVID-19 outbreak and the restraints on social interaction it brought upon us, I’m still yet to see the organization truly flex its muscles as almost all the ongoing projects had to be scaled down in scope significantly in order to comply with the new…
