Healing Hearts 2.0

Mental health and suicide prevention are topics that affect many of us. Hence, the Rotaract Club of University of Colombo, Faculty of Arts organised Healing Hearts 2.0—to help raise awareness and offer support where it’s needed most. This initiative unfolded in two impactful phases, each targeting different communities, but united by a shared mission: to nurture emotional well-being and offer support to those in need.
The first phase, held on January 23rd, 2025, saw a meaningful partnership with the Sumithrayo Foundation. The team visited Philip Attygalle Maha Vidyalaya where they hosted an informative session for Ordinary Level and Advanced Level students. The focus was clear—helping students understand how to identify and manage stress effectively, support peers who might be struggling emotionally, and learn where to seek help if needed. With student suicides on the rise, this session was particularly vital, offering practical advice on prevention and early intervention. Beyond the school visit, the project extended its reach through a public relations campaign aimed at university students. This campaign encouraged open, honest conversations about mental health, helping to reduce stigma and promote a culture of care within the academic community.
On April 2nd, 2025, Healing Hearts shifted focus to a different, equally important audience. In collaboration with the Suwa Arana Indira Gandhi Cancer Trust, which provides support for underprivileged cancer patients, the Rotaract team created a day of joy and comfort for children battling late-stage cancer. Through activities such as drawing, singing, and interactive games, the project aimed to offer these young fighters a welcome respite from the hardships of their illness. The experience fostered happiness and emotional upliftment in a safe and nurturing environment.
Healing Hearts 2.0 stands as a testament to the power of community-driven action in tackling complex social issues. This initiative not only raises awareness but also inspires active participation in mental health promotion and suicide prevention. It reminds us that no matter our age or circumstances, emotional well-being is essential, and compassionate support can make all the difference.
