Rota Awurudu’25 – Celebrating Tradition and Togetherness
On the 8th of April 2025, the Rotaract Clubs of the University of Colombo – Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Management & Finance, and the School of Computing came together to organize Rota Awurudu’25 , a collaborative New Year celebration. The project was aimed at reviving the spirit of the Sri Lankan New Year while promoting unity among university students from different faculties.
The festivities kicked off with the Kiri Ithiraweema, a traditional ritual that set the tone for the day—respectful, joyful, and deeply rooted in Sri Lankan culture. From there, the event came to life with vibrant energy. A standout moment was the Awurudu table, showcasing an irresistible spread of traditional treats like Kawum, Kokis, Asmee, Milk Rice, and Cake. It was more than just food—it was a celebration of heritage, shared over laughter and conversation. As the day went on, the crowd came together for a series of classic Awurudu games. From Aliyata Asa Thabeema and Banis Kama to the Goni Race, Tug of War, and even Musical Chairs, the games sparked plenty of friendly competition and team spirit. Winners walked away with small prizes, but the real reward was the shared joy and community spirit that made the event truly special.
Beyond the activities and games, Rota Awurudu’25 created an environment where students could connect, share experiences, and celebrate their cultural heritage together. The event emphasized the value of tradition while fostering collaboration between different university faculties. It served as a reminder of the importance of shared celebration and the role such events play in building unity across diverse groups.
