Nox: Curtain Call

The final dialogue is to be delivered, amidst hushed silence. After a year of enrapturing performances, we now stand at the edge of the stage with our backs to the curtain - amidst the orchestra's parting outro, staring into an audience in darkness. After a year of faith and loyalty, of the highest reception and valued critique, the time has come for the Editorial to momentarily bid farewell to her beloved companion and most treasured counterpart - the Readership. But not without the commendation, love, and gratitude it deserves. So here we are, after the music has finally died out, the applause simmered away, and the lights have come back on - all in preparation for our final Curtain Call,…

The Cyber Experience: The Epilogue

I thought long and hard for a witty line to start off this final article, but my mind is totally blank and I honestly don’t know how to start. Everyone who knows me knows that I always have something to say. But I finally settled on “It takes a minute to say hello, but forever to say goodbye”. I think this perfectly shows how much we loathe to say our farewells and to leave things and people that are dear to us. For me, as you might now know, standing near the gate with a list of names (6 pages long and unalphabetized) with Dulari as we ushered in people for the 11th installation ceremony, it was a moment of…

Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum’s Two Cents

I told Anudi how exactly I wanted to start this article and she panicked, saying that it was better to not risk it. Therefore, I decided to take the safer route instead. I remember standing in front of the gate during our club’s 11th Installation with a huge list of names along with Rtr. Anudi Karunaratne, complaining about why the list was not alphabetized. While standing there for a good two hours, I clearly remember saying “I’d like to help out next year but I do not want a position.” But Anudi would have none of it, as she would go on and on about how fun it would be if both of us were elected to the Board. My…

The Parting Glass

And so, the day finally comes around. The day that I wake up and realize that I am no longer bound by the duties and responsibilities tethered to the post of an Editor. It’s quite funny really, because I had always known this day would come and yet, as it arrives, I’m left feeling quite odd. A strange feeling creeps in. One that I know all too well and one that I, personally, am not too fond of. The feeling of farewell. “Of all the money that e'er I hadI spent it in good company” The Editorial was my home away from home in many ways. It was a safe haven that provided me with a platform to use my…

A Renaissance Of Our Own

To my colleagues, my predecessors, my successors, my dearest co-editor, and most of all,  myself – who was certain my perseverance and patience wouldn’t last a year After a grueling exam season that took the life and joy out of so many of us, I found myself sitting at my desk trying to tap into some artistic vein, as dry as it may be, to make this farewell a moment to remember. The need to mask my statements with verbose carvings and theatrics was too real, but instead, I’ve decided to disappoint so many of you who know me by opting to keep my flair for drama at bay. This farewell must be raw and direct, and coupled with a…

Month In Review: June

Hello everyone! Here we are then. Twelve whole months later. This month’s ‘Month in Review’ is quite special as this will be the final one for the current Rotaract year (damn, who on earth is cutting all these onions around here?). In a few days’ time, the reins of the club will soon be passed over to a new bunch of enthusiasts who are as equally passionate about Rotaract and just as talented. However, till such time, join us as we take one last trip down memory lane. June was both a quiet and busy month for us here at Rotaract Arts. Quiet because there were no projects to complete as June serves as a transition month from one Rotaract…

Interview: Anudi Karunaratne

A new Rotaract year is fast approaching, and there are several eager young faces waiting to join RotaractArts. For those that may not know you very well, could you please provide an introduction to yourself? Hello! I’m Anudi Karunaratne, a 2nd-year (soon to be 3rd!) undergraduate studying for an English Honors degree. Now, for a detailed introduction about me, I would recommend reading my introductory article “The ‘Cyber’ Experience”, but hey, to save you some time, I’ll summarize it for y’all, because I’m nice that way (insert evil laugh!). I’m one of the most (I kid you not) annoying people you’ll meet if you met me on a bad day. On a good day however, I’m friendly and helpful (or…

Interview: Dulari Bookoladeniya

The start of a new Rotaract year looms large! And with it, fresh faces will no doubt soon flood the club in a couple weeks. Could you please provide an introduction of yourself for anyone that may not be well acquainted with you?  My name is Dulari Bookoladeniya and I am the Secretary of the Rotaract Club of University of Colombo, Faculty of Arts for the Rotaract Year 2021/2022. In addition to being an Arts undergraduate with English as my main subject, I am also pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and Counseling.  I would say that I have a fruit salad-like taste when it comes to things such as music, movies and TV series. I am obviously…

Interview: Githmi Koralage

The role of the Assistant Secretary is an important, and at times, a rather stressful one. Ensuring the smooth operation of the avenues and the club’s clerical work is no piece of cake, yet you have managed to accomplish the task with great finesse. Before we venture into the particulars of the year you’ve spent in the Executive Committee, let’s begin with a brief introduction of yourself. Hi! I’m Githmi Koralage and I’m the Assistant Secretary of the club for the Rotaract Year 2021/22. I’m specializing in International Relations and currently, I have just finished my second year and am awaiting my results. I think a lot of people know me as the quiet, very calm girl. But the ones…

Interview: Muminah Hakeem

Rtr. Muminah Hakeem, you had been given the serious responsibility of handling the club’s finances, which meant you were a central figure in most of the club’s endeavors. Let’s begin with a quick introduction of yourself, and followed by  a brief explanation of your exact duties within the club. Hi, I’m Muminah Hakeem, the treasurer of the Rotaract Club of UOC Arts. I’m sure a lot of club members (specially the newbies) might not immediately know or recognize me because I’ve been working “behind the scenes” throughout this Rotaract year. But that is only because as the Treasurer, my main responsibility was to make sure all the financial records and accounts are in order, which usually happens after a project…
