கல்வி என்பது ஒரு மனிதனின் பிறப்பலிருந்து இறப்புவரை தொடர்ந்து செல்வதும் அவனது வாழ்வில் முக்கியமான ஒன்று என்பது அனைவரும் அறிந்த உண்மையாகும். இலங்கையானது அனைத்து வளங்களை கொண்ட நாடாக காணப்படினும் முன்னேற்றத்தை கண்டிராததற்கு பிரதான காரணமாக காணப்படுவது இலங்கையின் கல்வியின் பல குறைபாடுகளாகும். எமது நாட்டில் அதிகளவான கல்வியானது ஏட்டுக் கல்வியும் புத்தகங்கள் ஊடான கல்வியாகவும் காணப்படுகின்றதே தவிர ஒவ்வொரு பிள்ளையினதும் சுயதிறனை வெளிக் கொண்டுவந்து அப்பிள்ளையின் எதிர்காலத்தை நவீன உலகிற்கு ஏற்ப மாற்றியமைப்பதற்கான ஒரு சிறந்த கல்வி முறைமையை இலங்கை ஏற்படுத்தவில்லை என்பது பல காலமாக காணப்படுகின்ற குறைபாடாகவே உள்ளது. இலங்கையினைப் பொறுத்தவரையில் ஆரம்பக் கல்வி, இடைநிலைக்கல்வி, உயர்கல்வி அதற்கும் மேலாக தொழிற் கல்வி, முறைசாராக் கல்வி போன்றன நடைமுறைப்படுத்தப்படுகின்றன. இருப்பினும் இக் கல்வி முறையானது இலங்கையின் பொருளாதாரத்தை வளப்படுத்துவதில் எந்தவிதமான பாரியளவு பங்களிப்பினை செய்யவில்லை என்பது நாம் அனைவரும் அறிந்து கொள்ள வேண்டிய உண்மை. ஆரம்பக் கல்வி என்பது ஒரு பிள்ளையின் எதிர்காலத்தை தீர்மானப்பதற்கு இன்றியமையாதது ஆனால் எமது நாட்டின் கல்விமுறைமையானது ஆரம்பக் கல்வியிலேயே பிள்ளைகளை பரீட்சைக்கு தயார்செய்யத் தொடங்குகின்றார்களே தவிர தமது திறன்களை, திறமைகளை பிள்ளைகள்…
