Safe Space : Breaking Stigma Through Awareness
On 24th October 2026, the Rotaract Club of University of Colombo, Faculty of Arts, in collaboration with the Rotaract Club of Charusat University, India, successfully conducted “Safe Space,” an online International Service initiative aimed at raising awareness about sexually transmitted infections (STIs), their prevention, and the importance of seeking professional medical assistance. The session took place from 7.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m. (SLST), bringing together approximately 20 participants for an informative and interactive discussion.
The session featured Ms. Prabuddhi Kaluarachchi, a senior medical student from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya, who shared her knowledge through a moderated question-and-answer discussion. The conversation covered essential topics, including the differences between STIs and STDs, methods of transmission, common symptoms, preventive measures, testing, treatment, and available healthcare services in Sri Lanka and India.
Rather than following a conventional lecture format, Safe Space encouraged open dialogue, allowing participants to engage with the discussion in a comfortable and judgement-free environment. The interactive session also provided an opportunity for participants to raise their own concerns, with three additional audience questions addressed in detail by the resource person.
The initiative highlighted the importance of accurate sexual health education in overcoming misconceptions and reducing the stigma surrounding STIs. The positive responses received from participants and the collaborating club reflected the value of creating opportunities for informed discussions on topics that are often overlooked.
Through Safe Space, both Rotaract Clubs reaffirmed their commitment to promoting health awareness and fostering meaningful international collaboration. The project served as a reminder that breaking the silence surrounding sexual health begins with education, understanding, and the willingness to have open conversations.
